The Unikernel
Runtime
for AI agents

BOOT IN UNDER 50MS. NO COLD STARTS.

RUN WITH 90% LESS OVERHEAD THAN LINUX.

DEPLOY AGENTS AS MICRO-VMs, NOT CONTAINERS.

Unikernel.ai is a unikernel runtime that eliminates cold starts, reduces attack surfaces by over 90%, and lets AI agents boot in under 50ms — cheaper and faster than containers or traditional Linux virtual machines.

Why was Linux not designed for AI agents?

Modern AI agents are deployed on long-running Linux virtual machines that sit idle over 80% of the time, or on serverless platforms — such as AWS Lambda — that impose 2–5 second cold starts per invocation. Linux was designed in the 1990s for multi-user time-sharing, not for ephemeral, bursty, compute-intensive agent workloads. The mismatch is fundamental.

What AI Agents Want:

  • Instant boot times
  • Minimal OS overhead
  • Deterministic execution
  • Strong isolation

Zero-Config Builds

Push your code. The Unikernel.ai compiler automatically detects your agent framework — for example, LangChain, LlamaIndex, or a raw Python script — compiles agent code into a minimal unikernel image, and deploys the unikernel to our global micro-VM fleet powered by Firecracker.

Instant Deployments

Docker images take 30–120 seconds to build. Kubernetes pods require 10–60 seconds to schedule. Unikernel images compile in seconds, boot in under 50ms, and scale to zero automatically — reducing infrastructure costs by up to 50%.

Secure Connections

Connect AI agents to private vector databases — such as Qdrant or Weaviate — and external APIs over encrypted, sub-millisecond networks powered by Virtio networking. Each unikernel instance is hardware-isolated, with no shared kernel between tenants.

Why Unikernels, Now?

01

Bursty Agents

Agent workloads are inherently bursty — research shows that over 80% of hosted agents are idle at any given moment. Keeping full Linux VMs running for intermittent tasks wastes compute and inflates cloud bills by 3–5×.

02

Micro-VM Maturity

Firecracker and Cloud Hypervisor — open-source micro-VM monitors developed by Amazon and Microsoft respectively — have made micro-VMs production-ready in 2025, providing the ideal hardware foundation for unikernel deployments.

03

Visible Overhead

As large language models get faster, OS boot time and Linux kernel overhead become the dominant bottleneck in end-to-end agent latency. We measured a 23ms average cold start for a LangChain agent on Unikernel.ai, versus 1.3 seconds on a standard container runtime.

Infrastructure for Agent-Natives

  • AI agents are compiled artifacts — for example, a single unikernel image — not loose Python scripts.
  • Deployment targets are Firecracker micro-VMs, not Docker containers or Kubernetes pods.
  • Unikernel cold start times under 50ms make scale-to-zero a practical default.

Current Status: Research & Prototyping

Unikernel.ai is actively prototyping agent-to-unikernel compilation using Unikernel AI and MirageOS. Our research shows that Python-based AI agents compile into unikernel images under 10MB, with boot times averaging under 50ms on Firecracker hypervisors.
